Dr. Russo reports that based on the studies published so far, there is proven effect of phytocannabinoids on spasticity of Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy (Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes), chronic pain and schizophrenia.

Promising data from studies so far, but without undeniable results yet, appear in symptoms such as sleep disorders (as a symptom of neurological diseases), glaucoma, Tourette’s syndrome and lower urinary tract symptoms (as a symptom of MS).

He emphasizes that, especially in Alzheimer’s disease, combinations of phytocanabinoids (and in some cases terpenes) also help with the symptoms as shown below:

o Agitation: THC, CBD, linalool

o Anxiety: CBD, THC (low dose), linalool

o Psychosis: CBD

o Insomnia / anxiety: THC, linalool

o Anorexia: THC

o Aggressiveness: THC, CBD, linalool

o Depression: THC, limonene, CBD

o Pain: THC, CBD

o Memory: alpha-pinene (Russo, 2011, Russo and Marcu, 2017) + THC

o Neuroprotection: CBD, THC

o Reduced formation of amyloid plaques (Aβ): THC, CBD, THCA

To conclude, he proposes as prevention (and in some cases as a treatment) the following strategies:

• Aerobic exercise
• Education as a way of life (lifelong learning)
•  Anti-inflammatory diet, high in probiotics and prebiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, bioflavonoids (fruits, mainly berries), protein, restriction of carbohydrate intake
• Supplement with cannabis extracts containing THC, CBD, THCA, CBDA, caryophyllene and other selected terpenoids.
